Characteristics

Varanus macraei has dark, dark blue and black body colouring. Its relatively short and powerful limbs each end in five toes equipped with very sharp claws. The elongated head is triangular in shape, with relatively small eyes and a wide mouth equipped with very sharp teeth.

The maximum size of Varanus macraei is usually no more than about 30-35 cm (CL), with males tending to be slightly larger than females. Therefore, it is rare for a specimen of this species to reach a total length of more than one meter. However, individual differences in size and growth can occur, depending on various factors such as sex, diet, ambient temperature, and genetics. For tree monitor lizards, 1/3 TL and 2/3 SL apply.
