Distribution

Varanus macraei is endemic to Batanta Island, which is part of the Raja Ampat archipelago in West Papua, Indonesia. This species inhabits primary and secondary lowland rainforest and is an arboreal species, meaning it spends a lot of time in trees. Varanus macraei are often found near rivers and streams, which serve as important sources of moisture. Batanta Island is one of the smallest islands in the Raja Ampat archipelago. Human activities such as deforestation, slash-and-burn farming, and mining threaten the habitats of monitor lizards through destruction.
